Question:What' s your view on irradiated food?
Answer:Irradiated food is not sold in the UK. The controversy surrounding irradiation laid to rest plans to make it legal about 10 years ago and until three years ago, only a few irradiated herbs and spices were sold. Irradiating food would be a quick answer to any food hygiene and preservation problems - it zaps nasty bugs like salmonella and listeria, takes away the need for excess pesticides or additives and gives food a longer shelf life.

A supermarket' s dream perhaps, but a consumer' s nightmare. Although there appears to be no residual radiation on irradiated foods, the process itself creates highly reactive oxygen molecules - oxidants that are known to be at the root of heart disease and cancer. What' s more, irradiating food has also been shown to reduce its vitamin content by as much as 96 per cent, and make the essential fats in foods such as vegetable oils and nuts go rancid.
